Lisbie to stay?
Men wept openly in the streets around SE7 and strangers danced with each other as normally reliable sources revealed that striker Kevin Lisbie is to be offered a new contract at The Valley.
However, he would not be a first team regular and hence the former teenage wonder may move on. To where? Who cares?
Well I think quite a few Charlton supporters care actually Wyn. I genuinely thought that last year would see the best from forever young Kev but it was ravaged by injury and illness. It seems to be a blogger sport to take th piss out of Lisbie and it angers me to be honest. We should support our players, particularly those that are 'home grown'. I like your Charlton blog immensely Wyn but please get off the sloppy bandwagon. Far better to have a go at the mercenary Marcus Bents and Fays of this world or the ineffectual Ambrose and Rommers (who incidentally has moved house and been paid off handsomely for his 'efforts').
Fair comment and there is a risk of making Lisbie a scapegoat player. However, we are always being told that he is about to come good. I know that he had serious illness problems, but what worries me is his ability to miss easy goals. This offsets the brilliant goals he scores occasionally. I think it might be best for his career if he moved on, given perceptions of him among many fans at Charlton whether they are fair or not.
Based upon the SLP article it looks like he's taken the view that its time to go, whether we like him or not.
I do have some sympathy with Peter's view. Lisbie has been the scape goat for too many of the clubs ills, it was not just him that dropped two points at Watford, Holland should have scored much earlier, however he has not helped himself with some of his more dejected games in recent seasons where moving towards a ball has been a test.
Contrary to popular opinion, I think Lisbie is a useful and underated player. He has the one characteristic that decent forwards really need and also that frightens defences and that is pace. In my view ( controversial here) , if he had played the last 10 games with D Bent instead of Marcus , we would have stayed up.
Letting him go will be a mistake because he is a really useful forward to have available , particularly at Championshiop level
I shall keep the champagne on ice until he has finally gone. He has never come up with the goods. Hopefully he will take Bent M and Rommadunce with him. John
I started supporting Charlton in 1953 when my father took me to a game (my mother came sometimes as well). My father was born in North Woolwich in 1908 and
had been a Charlton supporter since the 1920s when an older cousin took him. He raised the admission fee by looking after horses while deliveries were made. I now live in Leamington in Warwickshire, but remain a season ticket holder, as was my late wife. Visitors to my CAP blog may be confused by this but, as well as being a Charlton supporter, I am expert on the CAP and the political economy of the food chain. I am also a frequent commentator for UK and international print and broadcast media and wire services on British politics, hence my new blog on the subject.
