Newts suspended after drugs test

Former Charlton midfielder Shaun Newton has been suspended for seven months from 20 May after testing positive for cocaine. The 30-year-old provided the positive test following West Ham's FA Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough on 23 April.

A popular player at Charlton who left the Addicks for Wolves before going to the Irons, Newts received a warm welcome when he returned with West Ham last season, applauding the crowd before the start of both halves.

Newts is one of my favourite ex harlton players, even though he neevr quite cut it at Prem. level, so I am saddened and dissapointed to hear this news. however, he is not some kid, he is a dad with 3 kids and he has been totally irresponsible. The ban is a joke, he will be back by November, probably with a Championship Club, he is not some young kid as Bowyer was and Jamie Stuart was, an 18 month ban was not unreasonable and again the authorities have baulked at making an example of a player.

I'm saddened by it because I always liked him as a player even though he never really did quite as well as I hoped he might. But he has been very stupid and has got off lightly with the Irons being very tolerant.
